An XML sitemap is very important for the SEO of your WordPress website as they help search engines read the content of your site.

Getting Started

Before you create an XML sitemap using this method you will need to ensure you have the Yoast SEO plugin installed on your WordPress dashboard.

This plugin is installed in the usual way by navigating to – PLUGINS > ADD NEW

Then in the search box type YOAST

The first plugin that shows should be the Yoast SEO plugin.

It will look like the image below.

Click INSTALL > ACTIVATE

Once the plugin has installed you will see SEO in your WordPress dashboard menu.

Creating an XML SITEMAP

You now need to click on SEO.

Now you are in the Yoast dashboard.

At the top of the dashboard you will see some headings.

Click on FEATURES.

In this section you will see a menu with some ON/OFF check boxes.

Navigate to the box title XML SITEMAPS.

Make sure this is set to the ON position.

Then click on the QUESTION MARK (?)

Now you will see a link that says SEE XML SITEMAPS. Click on this link as shown below.

Here you will see a list of sitemaps for your website.

These can now be used to copy and paste in to your Google search console.
