When you start to build your WordPress site it can be useful to have a coming soon page or a maintenance page if your site is already built and you need to make changes.

This should really be the first thing you do when you start building your website.

In this post I will show you how to easily add a coming soon page in WordPress.

What Is A Coming Soon Page

If you aren’t sure what a coming soon page is or if you need one then keep reading.

A coming soon page is a page you can add to your site that visitors will see while you are constructing your website.

This allows you to build your site without anyone seeing what is going on behind the scenes and you can make sure that your site is perfect before revealing it to the World.

You can also add a maintenance page if your site is already built and undergoing reconstruction.

These pages make your site look more professional to your visitors as an unfinished site will not look good and people will leave your site very quickly.  These visitors may never return if your site looks a mess.

By landing on a page that explains what is going on and when you will be online can get your visitors interested in your site and help you build an audience.

What Should You Have On Your Page

If you are adding a coming soon page to your site you will need to add some information to it.  But what information should you add?

What information you include will depend on the type of website you are creating and what the purpose of the site is.  This will affect what you want your visitors to do when they arrive on your site.

One thing most websites will include here is the name or logo of the website.  Adding this in a prominent position will let your visitors know immediately what the site is and introduce them to the branding of the site before they get to see inside.

You could also add a countdown timer if you know when your site is going to be online.  This helps you to build up the excitement of the website launch and get people interested in what your site has to offer.

Images of any products or services that you may have on your site is another way to get people interested in your business.

Choosing great images can really improve how your coming soon page looks and get your products known before launch.

Another great way to build a following before launch is to add an email capture form and social media links.

Building a mailing list before you launch your site can help drive traffic once your site is live.  You can interact with everyone on your email list in the build up to the launch of your site so when it is time to go live you have an audience waiting to visit your new website.

Adding your social media links, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can help to increase your following on these platforms as well.

The more people you can get interested in your content the better it will be for the success of your site.

How To Add A Coming Soon Page

Now you know what a coming soon page is and why you should have one we can look at how you can add one to your WordPress website.

The easiest and recommended way to add one to your site is to use a plugin.

There are many plugins that will do this job and it will be down to your personal preference as to which one you choose.

It is always worth checking a few different plugins out to see which ones have the features you require.

The plugin I use on this site is called Site Offline Or Coming Soon Or Maintenance Mode.

To install this go to your WordPress dashboard menu.

Go to PLUGINS >ADD NEW

In the search box type SITE OFFLINE.

The first plugin that should come up is the Site Offline Or Coming Soon Or Maintenance Mode.

The image below shows what the plugin looks like on the WordPress plugin page.

Click on INSTALL > ACTIVATE

Now you will see SITE OFFLINE on the WordPress dashboard menu.

Click on this to start setting up your coming soon page.

Once you have clicked this you will be in your SITE OFFLINE setup area.

In this area you can set up all the details needed for your page.  You can add a logo, site description contact info etc.

You also have options to add social media links.

Just follow the drop down menus and add the details that you need for your site.

You can then enable SITE OFFLINE MODE.

At the top right hand corner of your WordPress dashboard (next to your name) you will see that the SITE OFFLINE MODE is ACTIVE.

This can be used for maintenance mode as well if you are updating an existing website.  All you need to do is change the details on the setup page to inform your visitors that you are performing routine maintenance.

You can see a demo of the SITE OFFLINE page here.

There is a premium version of this plugin that gives you more templates and additional features but the free version has enough options for most users.

So now you know how to add a coming soon page to your WordPress website and a few reasons why you should add one.

Don’t forget this should be one of the first things you do when building your site.
