A common question for people building their first website is how to connect a domain to a hosting account.
To a newcomer this can seem a daunting task but in reality is quite straightforward.
Keep reading to find out how you can easily connect your domain name to your hosting account.
Before you start trying to connect a domain name to a hosting account you first need to make sure you have everything that you need in place.
The first thing you need is a domain name for your website. If you haven’t already got one you can buy one quite cheaply and there are numerous domain registrars available.
If you need a domain name you can check what is available here.
You will also need a web hosting account to connect your domain to and host your website. Again there are lots of options available and many different prices. If you are unsure about how to find the most suitable hosting for your website check out this blog post – How To Choose Hosting For Your WordPress Site.

Connecting Your Domain To Hosting
To connect your domain to your hosting account you first need to find out your web hosts Domain Name Server (DNS) settings.
These will usually be sent to you by your web host when you sign up and are different depending on the hosting company you signed up with.
The DNS settings will usually look something like ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com. You might have more than two but they will just follow on like the example.
The hosting I use gives four name servers.
Now you have your DNS setting you need to log in to your domain registrar account and navigate to your DNS set up page.
This is usually under your Domains section and then Manage DNS. This may vary depending on your registrar.
Here you should find a section titled Nameservers.
There should be an option to change the nameservers and use custom nameservers.
Choose this option and add your nameservers (ns1.example.com etc) in the boxes provided. Click save and your nameservers will be updated.
It can take anything from 30 minutes to a few days for the new settings to take effect.
So what happens now you have changed your nameservers?
Once they have updated you can then start building your website on your new hosting account with your domain connected.
Just remember to add a coming soon or maintenance page while you build your site so anyone who comes to your domain isn’t greeted with a partly built site. If you aren’t sure how to add a coming soon or maintenance you can find out here.
